About Me
I grew up in Southampton, England, where I learned piano from an early age. My family included my sister, whose musical path led her to punk, pop and, later, jazz. She is now a jazz author working under the name of Sammy Stein. My parents were not musicians but encouraged me to push forward for what I loved. At school I joined the choir and orchestra and continued my interests as I attended the University of North Wales in Bangor. When I married, I had to, for several years, work outside the musical arena, as an administrator and a computer programmer, but I always maintained my musical links by joining choirs and teaching. I now reside in Lincolnshire where I am a successful performer and teacher. I hold a music degree from the University of North Wales and a diploma in piano performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
I lived in Oxford for a while, and performed in Germany as part of the twining organisation. I have also worked in various venues across the UK, including Warwick, Southampton, and more recently Belvoir Castle, Harlaxton Manor, Lincoln, and other places in the East of England. My interest in Celtic music has been reawakened and in 2014 I entered a competition organised by the European Piano Teachers’ Association where I won first prize in their compositional competition with my piece entitled The Stream, since retitled 'Mourne Passage'. During my time in Lincolnshire I've been honoured to direct musical productions, and play 'in the pit' for various operatic and musical organisations within the area.
My style is influenced by my Irish heritage and love of Debussy. I now have pieces published at Piano Pronto, Sheet Music Direct, KDP Publishing and SuperScore. I'm also very lucky to have people who are influential in the world of jazz and popular music. I lead a choir and a small instrumental group, and now include pieces and arrangements for these in my compositional repertoire. as extensions to my bow, I depp for a big band and play keyboards in a 60s/70s band.
The world of music is vast! And I've aimed to claim as much of it as I possibly can.
